-Supply of household fuel using Rwandan peat: Awarded best paper prize in appropriate technology paper contest

 



 

As part of the science and technology support project for developing countries, and to find the solutions to the problems that developing countries face, the Korea Research Foundation and the Global Technology Sharing Center opened a contest for papers on appropriate technology and a paper submitted by ph.D student of Prof. Chung-Hwan(Steve) Jeon's team in PNU was adopted.

Rwanda is located in the equatorial south central Africa. The energy sector includes three sub-sectors: electricity, oil, and biomass. Among them, biomass contributes up to 85% to energy consumption needs, and 57% of wood fuel , charcoal 23%, and peat and 6% of pit.
In Rwanda, where wood is used as fuel, difficulty of economic growth as a result of the lack of other energy sources (petroleum, coal, natural gas, etc.) problems such as deforestation and air pollution are becoming a serious social problem. It is anticipated that it will solve the inconveniences of cooking and heating, reduce costs, and solve air pollution problems by spreading household appliances.
